Oh, Look. Another Secret AirPods Update from Apple (8B25 / 8B21)

Apple has quietly pushed yet another firmwa update to several AirPods models — without announcing it, without release notes, and without letting anyone know what changed. The new builds, 8B25 and 8B21, are assumed to include bug fixes, performance refinements, and possible tweaks to Live Translation support.

What Changed

As usual, Apple didn't publish release notes. Here are the updated firmware versions:

  • AirPods Pro 3 — updated to firmware 8B25.
  • AirPods Pro 2 — updated to firmware 8B21.
  • AirPods 4 (including ANC models) — updated to firmware 8B21.

Possible Improvements

With no official notes, we can only infer the likely changes:

  • General bug fixes and stability improvements.
  • Enhancements to audio performance, connectivity, or noise‑cancellation behavior.
  • Potential refinements to Live Translation on supported models.

Which Devices Are Included

This update targets Apple’s newer AirPods models running the H2 chip. Older AirPods and the AirPods Max are not included in this firmware release.

How Updates Are Delivered

AirPods firmware installs automatically — there is no manual update button. The update is pushed silently in the background when the AirPods are in their case and connected to a nearby iPhone or iPad.

How to Check Your AirPods Firmware Version

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap General > About.
  3. Select your AirPods from the list.
  4. Your current firmware version will be shown on that page.
Pro Tip: Keep your AirPods in their charging case and near your iPhone to ensure firmware updates install automatically. This helps avoid sudden audio or connectivity issues.
